About William

William John was born in London in 1961 and began his career in 1977 at Ealing Strings, one of Europe’s largest and most respected violin workshops at the time.

Working alongside Thomas Pilar, a member of the renowned Bohemian violin-making family, William developed his craft and gained invaluable experience from makers including Přemysl Špidlen and the late William Luff. These formative years provided a unique insight into the traditions, techniques and tonal qualities of the classical period of violin making.

Restoration & Craftsmanship Today

Today, William specialises in the meticulous restoration of fine Cremonese instruments, including works by Stradivari, Guarneri, Amati and Bergonzi, as well as important instruments by other Italian, English and French masters of the 17th and 18th centuries.

His work is informed by a deep understanding of historical materials and traditional craftsmanship. Over many years, William has travelled extensively throughout Europe, carefully sourcing the finest Balkan and Carpathian maple, together with spruce from the South Tyrol, selected for its exceptional acoustic properties.

William also prepares his own varnish, an essential element in both the making and restoration of fine stringed instruments. Its preparation and application are treated with the same care and attention to detail that define every aspect of his work.
